Creative Quarantine

Working with artist, Lisa Volta, our Al-Bustan students are introduced to contemporary artists of the Arab world. Learning about artwork and accomplishments of artists who are alive and making art now means students can relate to themes and ideas in the work whether it be social, political, or environmental, and be inspired by knowing artists who are living in the same world they are. We know this is true because of the consistently amazing observations these young artists make about the work they are looking at in relation to their own lives and experiences. It is truly incredible to observe!

This year was our first year making art online and at home. While there were some downsides to being physically apart, our program was able to include students from all parts of the city. We were able to experiment with a number of mediums including painting, drawing, clay sculpture as well as open-source digital drawing and painting programs.
