This youth-produced video was created at Al-Bustan Camp 2007 and facilitated by media educator Dahna Abourahme, education researcher Thea Abu El-Haj, and student assistant Nadia Elokdah. With humor and insight, a group of young people explore gender roles and critique stereotypical images of males and females. (04:40)
Mendeel
This youth-produced video was created in an after-school program with Arab-American teenagers, facilitated by video artist Laureen Griffin. Recounting her experience with wearing the mendeel (headcovering), a high school girl speaks about the issues she faces in making a choice that sets her apart from her peers. In conversations with her friend, they speaks about her experiences with discrimination, belonging, and Islam, while touching upon her family life and future aspirations. (06:40)
Misunderstanding
This youth-produced video was created in an after-school program with Arab-American teenagers, with the support of video artist Laureen Griffin. In response to the stereotypical imagery of Arabs as violent and terrorists, one Palestinian-American teenager speaks about his village elders’ approach to resolving conflict, and how he aspires to do the same among his family and friends in America.
