At the center of Sonia M’barek’s concert on Friday night at the French Institute Alliance Française in Manhattan was a song she performed a cappella: “Al Kalimat” (“The Power of Words”), with lyrics by the 20th-century Tunisian poet Mnaouer Smadeh: “Speak up and suffer, even if you die for the sake of the words,” it urged. She sang it with delicacy and strength, with mourning and determination, with intricate ornament and open passion…”
