After weeks of fluctuating weather between snow, rain and high winds, Philadelphia was greeted by a clear and sunny morning on April 14, 2018. It was a wonderful day to be outdoors and lend a hand giving some TLC to the corner lot where the Soul of the Black Bottom mural was created last November by artist eL Seed.
Prominent at Market and Preston Streets, the Soul of the Black Bottom mural was as vibrant as ever with the sun shining bright. However the corner lot regularly accumulates trash and the ground was all muddy and uneven with the weeks of rain, so nearby resident Pam Andrews had signed us up with the Streets Department’s Spring Cleanup Day to get together with neighboring residents to rake and clean the lot.
We were joined by volunteers from Repair the World (whose office is directly across from the mural site), Columbus Construction, LLC, UC Green and other West Philly neighbors. It was a sweet morning doing the work while chatting with neighbors, making new friends, and contributing to the beauty of our city.
Thanks to photographer Jen Strickland for spending the morning with us!
SHUKRAN to everyone who was involved in this project: Mural Arts Philadelphia for their partnership, eL Seed for creating the mural, the students who helped him complete it, community members in West Powelton, Al-Bustan staff, and all the volunteers who lent a hand!
