On Wednesday, May 24, 2017, the Moffet community came together to celebrate the students, parents, teachers, and partner organizations in the school’s garden. Organized by Al-Bustan, the Moffet Arts Celebration was a delightful gathering that intended to honor the work of those who make up this special community.
The performance and presentation portion of the Moffet Arts Celebration featured results of the Moffet Arab Arts After-School Program’s three sections, as well as partner organizations. Art produced under the guidance of Teaching Artist Lisa Volta and Art Assistant Mostafa Darwish was presented, along with student performances led by Percussion Director Hafez Kotain and Choir Director Serge El Helou. Additionally, students collaborated to present an art, rhythm and choir performance that combined the three disciplines. Community partners Taller Puertorriquñeos presented a Bomba percussion and dance piece led by percussionist Anthony Mendez, and H&S Learning Center’s Hip-Hop Dance Team and Hula-Hoop Team demonstrated their skills.
Throughout the event there were art activities led by Mostafa Darwish and community partners Taller Puertorriquenos, Smith Memorial Playground, Philadelphia Photo Arts Center, Mascher Co-op, and informational tables led by South Kensington Community Partnership and H&S Learning Center. Thanks to these community partners, attendees left the celebration not only with a greater appreciation for the hard work of the students in the Moffet Arab Arts After-School Program and the Moffet community, but also with painted faces, rocket-straw launchers, and an expanded knowledge of photography.
A highlight of the afternoon was recognizing Program Coordinator Max Dugan for his contributions over 3 years in managing the after-school program He is “the glue” that kept this program flourishing from year to year. Al-Bustan is grateful for his time and dedication in continuously making this program a meaningful experience for all the students, teachers, and partners.
The celebration was also an invitation for a potluck dinner, with attendees bringing Puerto Rican pastries, salads, falafel, hummus, pickled vegetables and even a ice cream cake cones. Many thanks to those families who brought a dish, as well as Al-Amana Market for donating falafel, hummus, and bread, and Cousin’s Supermarket for donating beverages.
