Join Al-Bustan for the 4th Neighborhood Forum of the Tabadul: Cross Cultural Exchange Through the Arts Project!

This is the final neighborhood forum of the year and will celebrate arts projects made by students throughout the school year from our partner schools, NEHS students, and all the parts of the Tabadul project that reflects culture, identity, and an “exchange” of sharing this with each other. Special guest performances from our teaching artists Hafez Kotain, Kwasi Burgee, and Jacob Winterstein and our partner teacher Dr. Jay Fluellen!

Expect an evening of music and spoken word performances around culture and identity as well as food from different cultures! We encourage participants to bring a dish that represents your cultural heritage with a description card. These forums bring youth and adults together across neighborhoods to exchange ideas and representations of culture and identity through collective art-making. One participant shared, “[The neighborhood forums] create a space where I can celebrate my school’s diversity with really creative works of art. I’m always blown away by how much talent my fellow students have!”

Are you a local restaurant around Northeast High School? Would you like to support this event by sponsoring 1-2 dishes or beverages that is reflective of your culture and your restaurant? We will list you on our website, social media posts, and promote you in the forum. Contact Tabadul Project Assistant, Josh at josh@albustanseeds.org

What is a Neighborhood Forum?

SHARE + ENGAGE:  Over the span of the academic year, NEHS students will host or be hosted by a school in another neighborhood to jointly share their artwork. The forums will provide opportunities for collective art-making dialogue sessions on culture with audience participation. NEHS students will present the art they have produced in Dr. Jay Fluellen’s class with the Al-Bustan teaching artists Jacob Winterstein (poetry/spoken word), Hafez Kotain (percussion), and Ricky Yanas (photography).

Goals

One of the goals of #TabadulPHL is for individuals to take ownership of and share how their culture and identity is represented. The neighborhood forums aim to build bridges between youth across neighborhoods to strengthen cohesiveness across the Philadelphia community by uncovering commonalities and appreciating how difference can be complementary rather than adversarial.
